Hudsonian Takes on ProCon 2025!

Adem Jones || Issue 15 || March 5, 2025

From February 25th to March 1st, a few of us from The Hudsonian: Adam Conklin (Editor-in-Chief), Izzie Holt (Copy Editor), Libby Star (Managing Editor), Jonah Flanagan (Photo Editor), and Adem Jones, took a trip down to New York City for ProCon 2025, hosted by the College Media Association, a conference and convention dedicated to students in mass media and communication. It was a whirlwind of learning, exploring, and a bit of chaos, but it was an experience none of us will be forgetting anytime soon. The conference itself was packed with incredible speakers covering a wide range of topics. We dove into discussions on reorganizing student publications to create more effective and aesthetically pleasing layouts, learned how to market and brand ourselves through website creation, and debated the practical and ethical implications of AI in journalism. There were also some heavier sessions, ones that tackled the increasing vilification of journalists and what it means to step into this ever-evolving, often challenging field. With over 700 students, professors, journalists, digital strategists, social media managers, and other media professionals in attendance from across the country, the sessions were insightful, eye-opening, and gave us a lot to think about as we continue to shape our own publication. But it wasn’t all work and no play. Exploring New York City was an experience in itself. Times Square’s sights and sounds, endless good food, and some hilarious moments within our group made the trip even more memorable. We had ourselves some conveyor belt sushi which was as cute as it was delicious, Izzie got her first tattoo, Adam spent a concerning
amount of time doing Trig homework, Libby somehow managed to break the Discord, Jonah was a menace, making Libby and Izzie think he was hiding in their room, and Adem conquered all five floors of Margaritaville. The entire trip was hosted by the one and only John Staerker, who made sure everything ran smoothly and that we were able to fully immerse ourselves in the conference without a hitch, so special thanks to John. But more than anything, this trip helped us grow. Not just as individual
journalists and students in mass media, but as a team. We’re back at Hudson Valley with a newfound sense of camaraderie, fresh perspectives, and a renewed drive to produce a paper that students can trust and be proud of. In the end, memories were made, lessons were learned, the spirit of Jimmy Buffett was alive and well (kinda), and we left NYC with a deeper appreciation for the field we’re stepping into. It was an unforgettable, life-changing trip, and we can’t wait to bring what we learned back to our paper.

Join Computer Science Club: Code, Create, And Connect!

Kelly Nguyen || Issue 10 || December 3, 2024

Are you interested in coding, technology, or just want to meet a community of people? Then the Computer Science Club is the perfect place for you!
The club is all about having fun, expressing creativity in code, meeting new people, and exploring fascinating topics regarding computer science. Whether you’re a beginner or have some experience, there’s something for everyone to enjoy and learn. The club meets every Thursday, in BTC 309, from 2pm – 3pm. The Club dives into unique coding projects like building websites and exploring new programming languages.
They have lots of interesting projects planned like making a game, collaborating on code, and even a coding challenge
with prizes. However, most of those mares a work in progress. The club has already gone over making a personal website and a “breathing simulator” animation using HTML and CSS. Of course, each club member’s program is a little different due to flexibility of the programs and individualizing their codes. When learning new coding topics, the club presents a slideshow explaining the basic concepts of what the members should know before jumping in. Then, the officers do a live tutorial where they type a block of code together. As members follow along, they are allowed to change up the color, layout, pictures, and etc to make the code their own. The officer doing the live tutorial will also explain the topic as they type. Doing this allows members to be
exposed to the new topic so they can learn more about it in their free time with what they already know. On days the club doesn’t code, the club likes to keep the fun going with discussions about the latest technology. Whether it’s exploring the world of A.I, debating the merits of different
programming languages, or just chatting about some technology, there’s always something exciting to talk about. Interested in being a part of this community? Join the discord server by scanning the QR code! There you’ll find announcements for upcoming
meetings, access to materials from previous sessions, and a place to share your thoughts and ideas about future meetings.

Values for Vikings: Walmart Black Friday Deals Dropped

Molly Graiff || Issue 7 || November 6, 2024

November is every bargain shopper’s favorite month for one reason… Black Friday! With Black Friday being on November 29 and Cyber Monday following on December 2, shoppers have many deals in store for them. Black Friday is the time for some of the best deals of the entire year especially on technology and toys.

Walmart has officially dropped its Black Friday and Cyber Monday selections which will become available for purchase before the Thanksgiving holiday! Walmart has dropped prices in three events, the first taking place Monday, November 11 at 5 PM the

second on Monday, November 25 at 5PM, and the last on Sunday, December 1 at 8PM. It’s advertised that prices will be up to 70% off online.

To snag these deals early, it’s recommended to shop online as they drop 5 days sooner than in-store. The sales events lineups are impressive with $200 off an Apple iPhone 13, a 65-inch Samsung TV for $398, and a Lenovo Laptop for merely $399.

Technology is not the only thing dropping in price; there are deals for everyone allowing for early Holiday shopping on a budget.

A LEGO Friends set can be found for $30 and a Dyson Cordless Vacuum for $399.99. Looking for headphones to best focus during your study time? Beats Solo3 Wireless On-Ear Headphones are listed at just $69.

Online shopping is the way to go this sale season as its benefits expand further than earlier offers. Gone are the days of fighting for the last item on the shelf; however planning before making purchases is still crucial as items sell quickly online.

U.S. to Prohibit Chinese AI Investment

U.S. Moves to Ban Chinese Investment in AI to Protect National Security

Christian Rasmussen || Issue 6 || October 28, 2024

The United States of America has made a powerful yet dangerous move against China, by potentially banning the investments of AI technology with China and Chinese companies. This move by the Biden Administration was to hopefully protect the people from inadvertently aiding the Chinese military by investing in Chinese companies.

According to Treasury official Laura Black, they will try to pass this bill signed by Joe Biden before the election hits. It is a seemingly final move from Joe Biden before the power of the presidency is exchanged from him to the eventual winner of the Presidential election taking place this November.

 The investment in Chinese AI equipment is seen as dangerous in the eyes of the American government, because it may give the Chinese a technological advantage over the United States. The United States likes to be able to maintain that power stance over nations to have leverage in the god-forbidden event when things go awry between nations.

There were a few exceptions to the rule being put in place against Chinese AI Companies, such as trading “index funds or mutual funds, certain limited partnership investments, and certain syndicated debt financings.” The regulation of trading with Chinese semiconductors and microelectronics was put in place to supposedly protect America and its people from investing in companies with unsure intentions.

A Department spokesperson for the U.S. Treasury Department has declined to comment on the matter, leaving officials confused as to what may be behind this move from the Biden Administration.
